Hi, I'm Chuck Hoeffler — the person behind The American Vine

A curious wine lover on a mission to explore every corner of American wine country — and bring you along for the ride.

How it all started

I didn't grow up in wine country. I grew up in a house where wine meant whatever was on sale at the grocery store — a jug of Gallo on the counter, maybe a bottle of Lambrusco at Thanksgiving. For a long time, wine felt like something for other people. People with more money, more knowledge, more confidence at a restaurant table.

That changed on a road trip through Napa Valley in April of '26. Along with my wife and some good friends we began our three-day journey in beautiful Yountville with its wonderful restaurants and quaint shops. We visited 8 wineries on our trip. Caymus, B Cellars, Silver Oak, Frogs Leap, were among them. By the time we left I was hooked!

That trip sent me down a rabbit hole I haven't climbed out of since. I started reading everything I could find about American wine — the history, the regions, the grapes, the people. I started keeping tasting notes in a notebook. I discovered that American wine is one of the most interesting, diverse, and underappreciated stories in food and drink.

The American Vine is now growing into something I'm genuinely proud of — a resource for anyone who loves American wine or wants to start. I'm not a sommelier. I don't have a formal wine education. What I have is an obsession to visit as many wineries, interview as many winemakers, and taste as many wines as I can and share this experience with you. I have a genuine belief that great American wine is one of the best things this country produces.

Why trust my recommendations?

I'm not a professional critic and I don't pretend to be. What I am is someone who is spending a serious amount of time and money tasting American wine — and who writes about it the same way I'd talk about it with a friend over dinner.

Every tasting note on this site is based on a bottle I actually paid for and opened. Every winery visit is a place I actually went. I pay for my own tastings and I have no financial relationship with any producer I write about. My only agenda is finding great American wine and telling you about it honestly.
