Make the Most of Every Tasting Room

Visiting a winery is one of the best ways to understand American wine. You get to taste straight from the source, talk to the people who made it, and see the land that shaped it. But a great winery visit doesn't happen by accident.

This guide covers everything — how to plan your day, what to ask in the tasting room, how to pace yourself, and which wineries across America are worth the drive.

Before You Go

Book ahead

Most top wineries now require reservations, especially on weekends. Book at least a week in advance for Napa and Sonoma; smaller regions are more flexible.

Limit yourself to 3 wineries per day

More than three and your palate — and your memory — starts to blur. Two is ideal if you want to linger and really engage with the wines.

Eat before you go

Tasting on an empty stomach is a fast track to a rough afternoon. Have a solid breakfast or lunch, and bring snacks for between stops.

Designate a driver or hire one

Many regions offer wine tour services and private drivers. It's worth the cost — you'll enjoy the day far more without worrying about the road.

Ask questions

The people pouring your wine usually made it or know the winemaker personally. Ask about the vintage, the vineyard, what they're excited about. You'll learn more in 20 minutes than from any book.

Ship, don't carry

Most wineries ship directly to your home. Buy what you love and have it shipped — hauling bottles through airports is a recipe for heartbreak.

Cellar Beast Winehouse

A woman- and veteran-owned Pennsylvania winery with a twist: handcrafted in Andreas, but sourced from premium vineyards in Washington, Oregon, and California. New Jersey Wine Country

Meadowbrook Winery

One of New Jersey's newest and most serious producers, Meadowbrook is making a compelling case for Garden State Cabernet Franc. Winemaker Conor Quilty brings experience from Sonoma, McLaren Vale, and Unionville Vineyards to a program built around multiple Cabernet Franc expressions — including a remarkable Whole Berry and a White Cab Franc — plus estate Chardonnay. The tasting room overlooks the vineyard through floor-to-ceiling windows.

Ridge Vineyards — Monte Bello

Ridge Monte Bello sits at 2,600 feet above Silicon Valley on limestone soils that produce some of the most age-worthy Cabernet in America. The tasting room is a converted barn with sweeping Bay Area views and staff who genuinely want to talk about what's in your glass. No flash, no pretension — just one of the most important wineries in American history doing exactly what it's always done.

Silver Oak Winery

Silver Oak has made exactly one wine from each of its two properties since 1972 — a Napa Valley Cabernet and an Alexander Valley Cabernet — and released each only when the winery decides it's ready. The focus is clarifying. The converted dairy barn tasting room in Oakville is one of the most welcoming in Napa, and the side-by-side comparison of the two Cabernets is one of the most instructive tastings in California.

Frog's Leap

Frog's Leap is the antidote to big, showy Napa. A 150-acre certified organic farm with dry-farmed vines, a real red barn for a tasting room, and Rutherford Cabernet that tastes like the land it came from. The Estate Tasting is one of the most substantive and fairly priced in the valley — and the Sauvignon Blanc is one of Napa's best-kept secrets.

Hammondsport, Finger Lakes, NY

Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery

The winery that changed American wine history. In 1962, a Ukrainian immigrant with a PhD in viticulture proved that vinifera grapes could thrive in the brutal winters of upstate New York. Today, grandson Fredric Frank carries on the legacy with some of the finest Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Cabernet Franc made anywhere in the country. Standing at the edge of Keuka Lake with a glass of Dry Riesling in hand is one of the great American wine experiences.

Laurita Winery

Laurita is New Jersey's most ambitious wine estate — 158 acres of certified organic vineyards, a grand stone-and-timber tasting room, and wines that make a genuine case for the Garden State as a wine destination. The Cabernet Franc is among the best in the state, and the summer terrace overlooking the vines is one of the finest places to drink a glass of Rosé on the East Coast.

Alba Vineyards

One of New Jersey's oldest continuously operating wineries, Alba has been farming its hilltop estate above the Delaware River since 1982. Forty-plus years of vine age shows in the glass — particularly in the Cabernet Franc Reserve, which is one of the most compelling examples of the variety in the state. The converted dairy barn tasting room and sweeping valley views make this one of the most atmospheric wine stops in the mid-Atlantic.

Fox Hollow Vineyards

Fox Hollow is the kind of small family winery that reminds you why regional wine matters. Tasting Room Etiquette

Skip the perfume and cologne

Strong scents interfere with everyone's ability to smell the wine — including your own.

It's okay to spit

Professionals do it at every tasting. Spitting lets you taste more wines without the alcohol adding up.

You don't have to buy

Paying a tasting fee doesn't obligate you to purchase. That said, if you love the wines, buying a bottle is a genuine thank-you.

Take notes

Even a few words on your phone — 'dark cherry, long finish, loved it' — will help you remember what you tasted when you're back home.

Respect the pour

Tasting pours are intentionally small. Don't ask for more of a wine you're not buying — it puts staff in an awkward position.

Plan by Region

Napa Valley

America's most famous wine region. Expect world-class Cabernet, stunning scenery, and some of the best restaurant dining in the country. Plan for 2–3 days minimum.

Best time: September–November (harvest)

Drive: 1 hour from San Francisco

Sonoma County

More relaxed than Napa, more diverse in style. Sonoma covers everything from Pinot Noir on the coast to Zinfandel in Dry Creek Valley. Easier to explore independently.

Best time: May–October

Drive: 1 hour from San Francisco

Willamette Valley

Oregon's Pinot Noir heartland. The valley is long and varied — plan to focus on one sub-AVA per day. McMinnville and Dundee are great bases.

Best time: July–October

Drive: 45 minutes from Portland

Walla Walla, WA

A charming small city surrounded by world-class Cabernet and Syrah. The downtown tasting room scene is walkable and welcoming — one of the best wine weekends in America.

Best time: June–October

Drive: 4.5 hours from Seattle

Finger Lakes, NY

America's best Riesling country, and a rising star for Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. The lakes create a unique microclimate — the wines are unlike anything from the West Coast.

Best time: August–October

Drive: 4 hours from New York City

Texas Hill Country

The most surprising wine region in America. Over 50 wineries within an hour of Fredericksburg, with a warm, unpretentious tasting culture that's completely its own.

Best time: March–May, September–November

Drive: 1.5 hours from Austin
